Shanahan's Wines was born from an unsurpassed love and respect for life on the land, established in 2005 by winemaker John Harris, due to his passion for wine and love for his family. The name is a tribute to his family and in particular his late grandfather James (Jim) Shanahan, with whom he spent many of his earlier years as a child, spending school holidays and weekends with him exploring and helping him on his beloved farm.
The initial concept was born during the 2005 vintage when John took 1 tonne of fruit and produced his first 70 cases of Shanahans wine to share with friends and family. The enjoyment of hand-crafting such a small amount of fruit and having a label his family could call their own was reason enough to begin this tradition.
John has had a long history in the wine industry working for several companies both big and small, and has travelled extensively around the globe; but the love for his family home in the iconic Barossa Valley brought him back where he has strong ancestral ties and an obvious love for the region itself and its people. Over the past decade John has won over 500 trophies and medals and has received recognition from wine writers all over the world, although you would be hard pressed to guess that from his outwardly relaxed and fun loving nature.
Shanahans Wines are hand-crafted using small parcels of premium fruit that represent the true individual characters of the vineyard and varieties. The fruit is fermented in small batches on skins in open top fermenters to retain as much fleshy fruit as possible. Each wine in the Shanahans portfolio tells a unique story which is close to John’s heart, and also reflects the individuality and charisma of each wine. Just like John’s grandfather Jim, each wine has loads of character and over delivers to bring you something truly outstanding.
Our philosophy is simple but says a lot about who we are and what we do; "The hands behind the wines". All we want is to share the story of the fruit where the wine was produced from and the land where it was grown. After all, great wines are made in the vineyard by the growers and farmers with their business partner Mother Nature.
We hope you enjoy our wines and we make our family proud!
